Causes of Canine Cushings:

  • Pituitary-dependent (85% of cases) — a benign tumor on the pituitary gland signals the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol
  • Adrenal-dependent — a tumor on one of the adrenal glands itself
  • Iatrogenic — long-term use of corticosteroid medications

Common signs

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Pot-bellied appearance
  • Hair loss (often symmetrical) and thin skin
  • Lethargy and muscle weakness
  • Panting
  • Recurring skin or urinary infections

Diagnosis and management

Diagnosis typically requires blood tests, urine analysis, and sometimes imaging. Once confirmed, treatment depends on the underlying cause and usually involves lifelong medication to control cortisol levels. Regular monitoring through blood work helps ensure the dose stays effective and safe.

With consistent treatment and veterinary follow-up, most dogs with Cushing's disease enjoy a good quality of life.
