Pet shedding season: how your cosy throws are the secret to a fur-free home

As millions of Brits settle into the longer days of spring, one veterinary expert is advising how pet-owning households can manage the surge in shedding and maintain a fur-free home during this peak season.

Every pet parent is familiar with the endless battle against fur-covered upholstery, but maintaining a pristine home doesn't have to mean compromising on style. Look no further than your 'cosy' throws - the unexpected secret weapon for catching shed hair before it ever settles into your upholstery.

If you don’t have a high-performance vacuum on hand 24/7, you likely spend a lot of time lint-rolling or sweeping up after your four-legged friend. While we love our pets, the 60% of UK households with animals know that spring sunshine often just serves to highlight the "fur-nado" left behind.

But managing the seasonal surge doesn't have to be a chore. According to experienced vet and VetMedi.co.uk founder, Dr. Charlotte Inness, you can keep your home aesthetic intact while managing the shed at the source.

Protect soft furnishings with blankets

Cosy blankets and throws are a household staple for both comfort and design, but they are also an effective way to protect furniture from excess fur settling into the fibres.

“Covering your sofas, bedding and chairs with a washable throw is a great way to keep fur levels under control this spring while maintaining interior style,” Dr. Inness says.

“If your pet has a favourite spot on the furniture, placing a dedicated blanket there helps to contain the fur to one area, acting as a protective layer for the upholstery. Once it’s gathered too much fur, simply pop it in the wash for a fresh, reusable cover.”

Maintain a regular grooming routine

Pets require regular bushing to remove dead fur, dirt and dander to keep them clean and their coats looking healthy, preventing painful matting or skin irritation. During spring, brushing increases to keep up with the pace of shedding.

“It’s vital to have a consistent grooming routine, especially now when fur reaches every corner of the home,” says Dr. Inness. “By brushing regularly, you capture the fur at its source, making it easier to manage before it hits your carpets.”

“If the weather is nice, take the routine into your garden. It’s a relaxing way to spend time with your pet, and drastically reduces the amount of fur falling onto your furniture and carpets.”

“If you’re new to peak pet-shedding season too, keep the sessions to a few minutes to keep it stress-free, and ensure you have the right tool for your pet’s specific coat type to avoid accidental skin irritation,” Dr. Charlotte adds.

Create designated pet areas

Similar to covering a favourite furniture spot, setting up designated areas for your pets can prove effective in maintaining fur levels throughout the rest of the home.

“Cosy pet bedding not only provides comfort, but is a handy way of keeping excess fur in one place,” advises Dr. Charlotte. “When your pet is away from the bed, you can pop it in the wash for a refresh if machine-washable, or give it a quick vacuum if it’s too large for the machine.”

Invest in HEPA-filter appliances

During peak shedding season, a high-performance vacuum cleaner becomes a homeowner’s best friend. While a daily routine may feel repetitive, some modern home appliances are designed with pet owners in mind.

“With pets losing significantly more fur in spring, increasing the frequency vacuuming is essential to keep up with the higher levels of pet fur and dander,” says Dr. Inness.

“Investing in a vacuum with a HEPA filter or a specialised brush roll makes a difference. These filters improve air quality by trapping dust and allergens rather than releasing back into the room - a significant benefit during hay fever season.”

“Air purifiers with HEPA filters are also a good investment,” adds Dr. Inness. “These can help to absorb airborne dander before it settles, with some designed to blend into your decor as a stylish, functional ornament. Not only are these appliances beneficial during spring, but they make the home feel much cleaner and fresher for both you and your pets.”

Keep up with regular pest treatments

During longer days, pets naturally want to spend more time outdoors. However, spring also sees an increase in flea activity in our gardens and local outdoor areas.

“Pets love to explore more when the weather improves, but more time outdoors increases the risk of bringing fleas into the home,” Dr. Inness warns. “This can quickly lead to a potential infestation - not just on your pet, but within your soft furnishings, carpets, and even on clothes too.”

“Regular flea treatments protects your pet’s health and helps in preventing scratching and itching that leads to even more fur being dropped around the home. Combined with regular vacuuming, proactive treatment is the best course of action in stopping an unwanted pest surge.”
